The Science of Infant Sleep
In this unit we explore the biological and physiological aspects of infant sleep and why sleep is critical to the physical and mental health of all human beings. We go further into how an infant’s circadian rhythm works and the factors and the homeostatic sleep process. We also discuss all of the key hormones and chemicals which drive infant sleep, why they are important to the overall sleep process and the factors which influence their production, and finally how to apply the science of sleep to sleep consultancy practice.
The Science of Infant Sleep
Understanding The Sleep Environment
In this unit we explore the key environmental factors that can influence an infant’s sleep including temperature, light, noise and more, and how these factors contribute to an infant’s sleep quality. We consider both scientific evidence and research balanced with other considerations such as psychological impact and practical implementation for caregivers. By the end of this until you will be able to setup an infant’s sleep space for optimal sleep conditions, whilst ensuring adherence to safety at all times and managing the practicalities for caregivers
Understanding Newborn Sleep
In this unit we explore newborn sleep patterns and how it compares to sleep of older babies and toddlers. We also cover key factors which can influence early newborn sleep development such as reflux, gut health and allergies. By the end of this unit you will be able to develop a support framework to implement practical, realistic and developmentally appropriate strategies for strong sleep foundations in newborn babies.
The Principles of Safer Sleep
In this unit we explore safer sleeping guidelines across various jurisdictions and support you keeping up to date with the latest guidelines where you live. By the end of this unit you will be able to understand the key guidelines aimed at keeping children as safe as possible during sleep.
Understanding Children's Sleep Needs
In this unit we explore the sleep needs of children across the age of 0-5 years and the research which supports this. We also explore the different research and clinical methods to help you understand when an infant is ready for sleep and enable you to create day and night time sleep routines appropriate to the sleep needs and the lifestyle of a family. We also explore the sleep needs of babies born prematurely, multiples and children going through key developmental stages.
Infant Sleep Disorders
In this unit we go through a range of common sleep disorders in children, the symptoms associated with each, and why they occur. By the end of this unit, you will know how to support clients with sleep disorders, including being able to reflect upon your own ability to support a client with a sleep disorder and when referral to a medical expert is required.
Nutrition & Night Feeding
In this unit our nutritional expert Lucy Upton explores the relationship between nutrition and sleep, including the impact on hormones and sleep cycles, which foods can positively and negatively impact sleep, and the ever-topical issue of supplements. We also explore feeding strategies to optimise infant sleep during the night and by the end of this unit, you will be able to assess high-level nutritional points in a sleep diary and be able to implement various night feeding strategies to meet the feeding goals of a parent.
Sleep Improvement Strategies For Toddlers
In this unit we further explore these sleep improvement strategies to toddlers and children up to the age of 5 years old. We will discuss the use of psychology-driven strategies to further support change in older infants and how different strategies may be required compared to babies. We also include bonus content on how potty training can impact sleep and Autism & Anxiety in sleep. Neither of these bonus modules are included in the assessment.
Client Referral & Practicing Ethically
In this unit we explore what to consider when assessing client suitability for your own practice and whether there is alignment with your values and ethos. We also review other key factors such as health considerations and parental considerations and when clients should be referred to a different expert. We also review the role of reflective practice in infant sleep consultancy and how to practice ethically.
Understanding How To Apply Sleep Improvement Strategies
In this unit we explore a vast range of sleep improvement techniques across the sleep training spectrum, ensuring you are hugely knowledgeable and flexible in your approach to working with clients. This includes covering a range of complex sleep scenarios in relation to the biology and physiology of sleep, why some strategies are more appropriate and effective than others to resolve common and complex sleep issues, and how to create appropriate plans to improve infant sleep in different situations.

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR STUDENTS
“I would like to thank Dani and Chris for their course. I think their journey to this point is aspirational. I hope to help as many families as I can after now completing the course. The payment options are inline with their ethos of helping people and the support system options that follow are amazing. I really just can’t wait to get started! Truly changed my life – after having my first baby 7 months ago, I have been filled with dread knowing I’d have to leave my Son and also the anxiety of returning to a job I hated! Thank you again and I would recommend this certification course to anyone considering infant sleep consultancy.”
